MIA LAUNCHES SUSTAINABILITY SHOWCASE 2025 AND NEW SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATION TO ACCELERATE THE PROFESSION’S SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP

The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) today unveiled two new initiatives — the MIA Sustainability Showcase 2025 and the MIA Certificate of Sustainability for Accountants — designed to strengthen the profession’s sustainability leadership.

Themed “Empowering Accountants for a Sustainable Future”, the inaugural Sustainability Showcase underscores the profession’s vital role in embedding ESG principles into business, turning strategy into measurable impact, and enhancing accountability.

Speaking in her capacity as the new President of MIA effective 8 December 2025, Puan Saniza Said remarked: “To ensure our members benefit fully, MIA is offering the Sustainability Showcase on a complimentary basis, supported by our RM1.1 million allocation to enhance members’ development, skills and future-readiness.”

The Showcase connected close to 600 chartered accountants including sustainability leaders, industry experts, regulators, technology providers, academicians, and practitioners under one roof. It centred on two key pillars:

  • Sustainability Frameworks, Regulations agenda and prepare accountants for a rapidly changing landscape.
  • & Reporting and Sustainability in Practice — to drive tangible results and prepare accountancy professionals to meet evolving stakeholder expectations.

During the Sustainability Showcase, MIA also officially launched the MIA Certificate of Sustainability for Accountants. This is a structured three-day learning pathway designed to equip accountancy professionals, finance leaders, and sustainability practitioners with essential technical and practical competencies required for ESG and sustainability reporting, climate-related disclosures, assurance, and strategic advisory.

“The programme is one of the initiatives under the MIA Sustainability Roadmap which operationalises the MIA Sustainability Blueprint for the Accountancy Profession. The Roadmap consists of 169 initiatives which are being implemented over a 5-year period,” stated Puan Saniza.

These two initiatives are critical components of MIA’s proactive leadership and advocacy in strengthening the profession’s sustainability leadership readiness. Its holistic and integrated initiatives include:

  • the overarching MIA Sustainability Blueprint for the Accountancy Profession
  • the MIA Sustainability Framework and Strategy Plan (which supports institutional sustainability preparedness)
  • the National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF) Symposium
  • continuous professional development programmes, and
  • collaboration with regulators and international bodies.

“Looking ahead, the shift towards sustainability will continue to accelerate. To stay competitive, Malaysia must build a profession that is digitally enabled, ethically grounded and sustainability competent. Strategic collaboration among industry, Government, academia and professional bodies is essential to ensure that businesses and organisations, especially SMEs, are included in this transition,” concluded Puan Saniza.
