MIA SUSTAINABILITY FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY PLAN (“THE FRAMEWORK”)

The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) has further strengthened its commitment to advancing sustainability with the MIA Sustainability Framework and Strategy Plan (“the Framework”), building on the MIA Sustainability Agenda conceptualised in 2022. The MIA Sustainability Agenda adopts a two-pronged approach, advocating sustainability for the accountancy profession and the Institute. This aligns with MIA’s nation-building efforts and its effort contributing to national sustainability goals.

The Framework has been developed to operationalise the Institute’s sustainability commitments. It complements the Blueprint by embedding sustainability within MIA’s own operations, governance, and long-term strategic direction. The Framework represents MIA’s responsibility as a statutory body under the Accountants Act 1967 to regulate and develop the accountancy profession in Malaysia, while also demonstrating leadership in promoting sustainability.

THE FRAMEWORK “HOUSE-VIEW”

The Framework “house-view” illustrates its core elements comprising it’s the institutional vision,
strategic themes, material matters, alignment with United Nation’s Sustainable Development
Goals, flagship initiatives, and supporting enablers.

STRATEGIC THEMES

Internal and external analysis as well as stakeholder engagement led to the determination of, material matters and sustainability objectives. Sixteen initiatives identified are categorised into five flagship initiatives to ensure the achievement of three sustainability themes.

The initiatives will be implemented through a structured three-year roadmap from 2025 to 2028.

The Framework reaffirms MIA’s commitment to lead by example, embedding sustainability within its operations, empowering the accountancy profession, and contributing meaningfully to Malaysia’s sustainable development goals.

The use of the word ‘Accountant’
In Malaysia, the word ‘Accountant’ is protected as provided for under the provisions of the Accountants Act 1967 which states that no one can hold himself out or practise as an Accountant unless he is registered as a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.

‘The Malaysian Institute of Accountants is committed to the observance and practice of the highest ethical standards of the accountancy profession. All PC holders are reminded that under the MIA By-Laws (On Professional Ethics, Conduct And Practice), no person shall practice or hold out anything on audit/tax services without a license approved by the Ministry of Finance. Every PC holder is therefore expected to comply fully with Section B200.1 to B200.6 of the MIA By-Laws (On Professional Ethics, Conduct And Practice) failing which, you may be held liable for unprofessional conduct and disciplinary action may be taken against you.’

Oversight Committee

  • Assist the Council in the overarching sustainability direction and strategy.
  • Set and monitor progress of targets related to sustainability-related risks and opportunities, inclusive of related performance metrics included in existing remuneration policies.
  • Assess the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives and performance against established goals and benchmarks, including reviewing sustainability metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Provide oversight to the Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC) to ensure that the implementation of sustainability strategies and initiatives is in accordance with the recommendations by the Audit and Risk Management Committee (ARMC).

Audit and Risk Management Committee (ARMC)

  • Play an independent role for oversight over MIA’s sustainability reporting process, internal control and management of sustainability risks and opportunities.
  • Review and provide recommendations to the Council on the adoption of a suitable sustainable reporting strategy that covers sustainable-related risks and opportunities over the short, medium and long term, and oversight on sustainability reporting.

Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC)

  • Oversee the progress and initiatives under the Framework.
  • To drive the Framework and other future sustainability strategies of the Institute.
  • Ensure alignment between sustainability strategies and initiatives with the organisational priorities of MIA.
  • Ensure Council buy-in of proposed strategies and initiatives through the Oversight Committee.
  • Ensure the effectiveness of sustainability disclosures.

Sustainability Department

  • Implement internal sustainability framework and roadmaps based on the input from relevant Council, Committees and key internal stakeholders.
  • Periodic review of sustainability strategies, initiatives and action plans to ensure timely delivery of sustainability initiatives and reporting to the Sustainability, Digital Economy and Services Division.
  • Present recommendations for sustainability initiatives to the SSC to ensure MIA is able to adapt to changes in the sustainability landscape.
  • Data collection point for metrics and targets based on sustainability goals set, gathering all relevant information across MIA departments for internal performance evaluation and external reporting.
  • Focal point for sustainability reporting with alignment to relevant standards and guidelines.
