As at to date, no further examination is required if you have met the academic requirements as per Part I of the First Schedule of the Accountants Act 1967, or if you are a member of a recognised professional accountancy body listed in Part II of the First Schedule of the Accountants Act 1967, or have successfully completed the MIA Qualifying Examination.

No. Nonetheless, you are welcome to directly join as an MIA member if you are a member of one of the recognised professional accountancy bodies listed in Part II of the First Schedule of the Accountants Act 1967.

You can register via https://member.mia.org.my to be a mentee in the CARE programme.

You are recommended to register as CARE Mentee after you have been employed as you will need to update your employment details and subsequently update your relevant working experience to fulfil the Technical and Generic Competencies requirements.

There is no registration or yearly subscription fee in the CARE programme.

From the first day the mentee started working full time in accounting or accounting related job. It is important to note that the mentee is required to work at a workplace for a continuation of at least six (6) months for the experience to be considered.

Yes, as your mentor will be reviewing your practical experience and assessing your achievements in the required areas of competencies.

Your mentor must be a Chartered Accountant of MIA and preferably an employer in a supervisory position.

For verification of technical competencies, he/she is preferably employed in the same organisation as the mentee. He/she may also be employed in a different organisation but nonetheless has regular contact with the mentee and working in accounting or accounting related areas.

For verification of generic competencies, he/she must be employed in the same organisation as the mentee.

Always avoid having a friend or relative as a mentor to prevent any potential conflicts of interest.

You should ideally appoint a mentor at the start of the CARE programme so that he/she can review your practical experience and assess your achievement in the required areas of competency.

For the verification of technical competencies, it is not necessary to appoint a new mentor for your current employment. However, you have to obtain approval from your existing mentor to verify on your technical competencies in the new company.

For the verification of generic competencies, you are required to engage a new mentor from your new organisation.

Once you have registered via the MIA Member Services Portal, there will be two Options available for Mentee in the appointment of CARE mentor. You are only required to select one of the options as below.

1st Option: If the mentee does not have a mentor and requires the support from MIA to source for a mentor, please click “Request MIA for Mentor”. MIA will assist to assign a mentor and the mentor is given 10 days to accept the assignment.

2nd Option: If the mentee has his/her preferred mentor who is a MIA member, please click “Add Mentor” and provide the details for “Member No” and “Member name”. Upon completion, please press submit. A notification email will then be sent to the selected mentor and he/she can accept the request within 10 days.

Important Notes:

  • You are only allowed to have only one CARE mentor at one point of time.
  • If you have a change of mentor (for example change of career), it is advisable to have the mentor to sign-off your competencies first. For change of mentor, you are required to send an email to care@mia.org.my stating the reasons of the change.
  • If you are unable to add details of your preferred CARE mentor under the 2nd Option above, please check with your supervisor if he/ she has registered as a CARE mentor. Otherwise, please remind your mentor to register himself/herself as the CARE mentor.

You may remind your CARE mentor the following steps:

  • Request your CARE mentor to log into https://member.mia.org.my/member using MIA membership number and password. o From his/ her Member’s Profile Page, please request him/ her to click “Submit Application” and then “Apply for Mentor”
  • Please remind your CARE Mentor to read the terms and conditions as mentor and upon acceptance to click “submit” button.
  • Upon submission of your request via “Add Mentor”, there will be a notification email sent to the MIA member to accept the request for appointment as CARE Mentor. In addition, you may also request him/her to accept your request personally.

Your mentor should be someone with whom you can work closely and meet regularly, and also have a strong commitment in guiding you throughout the CARE programme. If your mentor agrees to act on this arrangement, the mentor will support you for the duration of the CARE programme. Otherwise, you have to find another mentor and please ensure that the current mentor has verified all records regarding your practical experience.

Practical experience recorded under CARE will not require testimonial. Nonetheless, we do encourage the mentor and you to keep practical experience evidences such as (but not limited to) job specifications, performance appraisal forms, written reports, projects summary and time sheets.

The frequency and length of meeting with your mentor will vary. You should agree on how and when your mentor will review your performance in your first meeting with him/her.

We recommend that you regularly update your working experience preferably every 6 months to ensure your records are up-to-date. In the event you have plans in changing mentor or career, please ensure that your existing mentor and/ or employer have verified your practical experience.

No. You can gain relevant experience in any organisation as long as the competencies obtained are from any of the following eight (8 ) areas of the technical competencies:

  1. Auditing
  2. Taxation
  3. Management Accounting
  4. Financial Accounting & Reporting
  5. Business Performance & Planning
  6. Information System
  7. Finance
  8. Insolvency

Yes, MIA recognises overseas practical experience to gain admission into the Institute as a Chartered Accountant as long as the mentee has fulfilled the requirements as set in CARE programme. The experience is required to be verified by a Chartered Accountant of MIA.

You can appoint any Chartered Accountant of MIA to be your mentor. He/she will be recognised as an external mentor if the person is not working in the same organisation as you.

No, since there is no representative of the employer to verify the generic competencies. A representative of the employer must be someone of a more senior position to the mentee.

No. The mentee can remain with the same mentor. However, we recommend the mentee to appoint a mentor within same employing organisation as the mentee.

Yes. However, the CARE programme only recognises permanent employment of six (6) months and above as well as relevant accounting or accounting related experience.

Part-time experience or industrial attachment (including internship) with any organisation during your undergraduate degree will not be considered as part of the 36 months experience.

MIA may allow for an extension of time required provided you give valid reasons and propose reasonable time period to complete it, subject to the satisfaction of MIA.

  3. Read the terms and conditions as mentor and upon acceptance to click “submit” button.
  4. Upon submission of mentee request via “Add Mentor”, there will be a notification email sent to you to accept the request for appointment as CARE Mentor within 10 working days.

Mentors in the CARE programme will be entitled to 4 CPE structured hours when they have verified competencies obtained by their respective mentees at least once a year, regardless of the number of the mentees.

Please log in to https://member.mia.org.my using your MIA membership ID and password. You may have the option to either accept or decline the request to be a mentor. It is appreciated for the mentor to respond promptly so that the potential mentee would be able to source for another mentor, if required.

Below is a quick guide that will assist you, as the CARE mentee, with the recording of your relevant practical experience under the supervision of your CARE mentor.

  1. CARE mentee to update Technical Competencies
    • Upon the acceptance by the CARE mentor, mentee is to click at the left menu “My Mentor” and then click on the right panel of “Submit Evaluation” tab.
    • Mentee is required to fill in the details on the technical record of experience
    • Mentee is required to click on “Save” button to keep the input made.
    • Upon completion and ready for submission, mentee is required to click on “Submit for evaluation” button
    • A notification email will then be sent to the mentor to verify on the competencies submitted
  2. CARE Mentee to update Generic Competencies • Mentee to click at the left menu “My Mentor” and then click on the right panel of “Submit Evaluation” tab.• Mentee is required to fill in the details for the “generic record of experience” and to click “save” to keep the input made.
    • Upon completion and ready for submission, mentee is required to click on “Submit for evaluation” button
    • A notification email will then be sent to the mentor to verify on the competencies submitted
      Important Notes:
    • If the mentee reports directly to the MIA CA, who is a mentor, he/she is encouraged to request the same mentor to verify on the Technical and Generic Competencies
    • A notification email will be sent to the mentor to verify on the competencies submitted. Please remind your CARE mentor once you have submitted the competencies for evaluation.
    • You may accumulate your experience from previous employment to complete the 3 years of relevant working experience requirement. The minimum duration in one company is at least 6 months period for the experience to be recognised and part-time experience will not be considered.
    • For technical competencies, the same CARE mentor is allowed to verify your technical record of experience at different companies
    • For generic competencies, it is compulsory for you to get the person whom you directly report to at each employment to verify on your generic competencies. However, if the employer/supervisor is not a member of MIA, mentee has to request the employer/supervisor to verify via hard copy form and subsequently upload to the system.
  3. Mentee to apply as a Chartered Accountant (M) upon completion of the CARE Programme
    • Mentee may apply as a CA (M) upon completing and signing off the CARE Programme
    • Please click on the left menu “Submit Application: Chartered Accountant” and to fill in all the required fields and follows all steps required.

Yes, you can. A mentor can have up to 10 mentees at any one time.

Unfortunately only Chartered Accountant of MIA is eligible to be a mentor in CARE.

The mentee should ideally appoint a mentor at the start of the CARE programme so that the mentor can review the practical experience and assess achievement in the required areas of competency.

Yes, you can. We suggest the mentor to stay in touch in the form of phone conversations, faxes and e-mails to assist your mentee to stay on track and rectify any problem that may occur throughout the CARE programme.

Regular communication and feedback are important towards the development of your CARE mentee. It is recommended for the mentee’s practical experience to be verified at least every 6 months to ensure the mentee’s progress is well monitored.

It is advisable that the mentor completes his/her mentoring period. However, if the mentor discontinued mentoring, the mentor should verify and sign off the mentee’s practical experience for relevant experience of 6 months and above.

Yes, this could be accepted subject to the verification of your competencies by the CARE mentor. Nonetheless, the mentee is still required to fulfil the practical experience in the CARE programme for minimum of 36 months duration.

The verification should be done by the same mentor because the mentor should have knowledge and understanding of the mentee’s works. Nonetheless, the mentor can seek information and clarification on the mentee’s competencies from other sources before verifying the practical experience.

Yes, as long as the mentor works within the same organisation as the mentee.

Yes, you can still be a mentor for that particular mentee. However, you will act as an external mentor and therefore may need to arrange with the mentee’s new organisation to get feedback on the mentee’s competencies before verifying the experience.
