The story of Suunto began in Finland 80 years ago. Tuomas Vohlonen, an orienteering champion and an outdoor sports enthusiast, decided to solve a problem that had been bothering him for a long time: he felt that the compasses at the time were inaccurate.
As an inventive engineer, Vohlonen developed a production method for liquid-filled compasses. This meant that the needle of the compass was much steadier and provided a superior and more accurate reading. Vohlonen patented his extraordinarily effective technology intended for mass manufacturing these compasses in 1936 – so Suunto was created.
