MIA ORGANISES INAUGURAL DTAA TO RECOGNISE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION EXCELLENCE IN THE ACCOUNTANCY PROFESSION
The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) recently organised the inaugural Digital Technology Adoption Awards (DTAA) to recognise and inspire excellence in digital transformation in the accountancy profession. Fourteen winners were announced at the awards presentation dinner held in MITEC Kuala Lumpur today (see appendix below for full list of winners). First launched in 2023, the DTAA continues to accelerate MIA’s digital advocacy efforts as steered by the MIA Digital Technology Blueprint issued in 2018.
The DTAA seeks to achieve three core objectives. One, promoting technology adoption by sharing success stories across the accountancy profession. Two, raising awareness of how accountants can contribute to businesses and economy through digital technology adoption. Three, recognising digital adoption efforts and thereby inspiring others to follow suit.
In his welcome address at the DTAA presentation ceremony, MIA President YBhg Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamad Zabidi Ahmad said: “The DTAA recognises outstanding achievements of technology application by the accountancy profession in commerce and industry, public practice, and the public sector. It is hoped that these successful examples will encourage others in the profession to undertake digital transformation.”
Guest of honour at the DTAA, Deputy Minister of Finance YB Puan Lim Hui Ying commended MIA on the DTAA and its continuing advocacy for digital transformation. “Such initiatives are especially relevant and aligned with the national agenda for digital transformation and the rise of the digital economy.”
YB Puan Lim emphasised the important roles of accountants in the digital economy and urged the profession to continue transforming and acquiring digital competencies for future relevance. “Achieving Malaysia’s digital transformation and digital economy goals requires a talent pipeline of future-fit and high-quality professionals to meet the needs of employers and organisations across all sectors.”
She urged accountancy professionals to become more adept and knowledgeable on the adoption and implications of technologies and tools that are relevant to the profession, such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, blockchain, cloud, and cybersecurity, among others. “This will better equip them to navigate their expanding and diverse roles to provide effective leadership and service excellence in this complex, disruptive and unprecedented post-COVID world that is increasingly digitalised,” she said.
YB Puan Lim also advised accountancy professionals to be digitally agile as technology is becoming increasingly embedded into environmental, social and governance (ESG) and sustainability practices, another high priority area where accountancy professionals are expected to play a key role.
The DTAA criteria, designed with meticulous consideration, delve into various facets of digital technology integration within organisations. From assessing revenue and costs to evaluating experience and impact, and other value creations, these criteria provide a comprehensive framework for gauging the impact of digital transformation.
The adjudication process was conducted from October 2023 to March 2024 to select the award winners. Chairperson of the DTAA Task Force, Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan explained that the technology implementations recognised under the DTAA centred around the roles of the accountancy profession.
“For the commerce and industry category, the technology adoption is expected to provide enhancements or improvements in the finance function. For the public practice category, accountants are expected to retain, reimagine and innovate their practices and services. For the public sector, the technology adoption is expected to improve the efficiency of daily operations and increase the satisfaction of the public.”
MIA expressed its heartiest congratulations to the winners and hopes that the DTAA success stories will inspire further digital transformation for the future relevance of the accountancy profession.
